Euonymus atropurpureus (Wahoo)

Sometimes called “native burning bush” for its spectacular red fall color. Grows well in sun, better in light shade, but needs some protection from the wind. Adapts to heavy clay soils. Small purple flowers in the spring followed by scarlet red fruit in the fall which birds enjoy.

Associates: Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple), Asarum canadense (Wild Ginger), Carya cordiformis (Bitternut Hickory), Celtis occidentalis (Hackberry), Hydrophyllum virginianum (Virginia Waterleaf), Phlox divaricata (Blue/Woodland Phlox), Polemonium reptans (Jacob’s Ladder), Tilia americana (American Linden)
